It was not long after the introduction of Air Conditioning that Dean McNaughton read a magazine article in Time magazine touting the virtues of California and decided that the sunshine state would be his next adventure.
The West Point grad, a second-generation newsman and son-in-law of a Army general, cruised the coast from San Diego northward until he could find a newspaper publisher willing to part with their news operation. It took him all the way to the Bay Area and was in January 1961 that he wrote of the McNaughton family’s commitment its community in the weekly Solano Republican, upgrading it to a daily newspaper and renaming it the Daily Republic.
McNaughton purchased the El Dorado County’s Mountain Democrat and Yolo’s Davis Enterprise in 1967. With his two sons at his side, McNaughton Newspapers, Inc. purchased the Winters Express in 1994, El Dorado Hills’ Village Life and Cameron Park Life in 1997, and The Divide’s Georgetown Gazette in 2004.
